Short answer: for a phone, cards and keys, a small crossbody about 7 to 9 inches wide is enough. If you also carry a full-size wallet, sunglasses and a small water bottle, go for a medium bag about 9 to 11 inches wide. Choose 11 inches or more if you want a crossbody for work or travel.

How to measure what you carry
Lay out everything you carry on a normal day. Measure the widest item, usually your phone or wallet, and add about an inch so the zipper closes easily. Most current phones are about 6 to 6.5 inches tall, so a bag under 7 inches wide is a tight fit for larger phones.
Depth matters too
Width gets the attention, but depth (front to back) decides whether a wallet and sunglasses case fit at the same time. Under 2.5 inches deep holds flat items only. About 3 to 4 inches deep holds a wallet plus a glasses case.
Strap length
For a crossbody, the bag should sit at your hip. A strap drop of about 20 to 24 inches suits most adults, and an adjustable strap lets you wear the same bag higher for travel or longer for a relaxed look. Taller people, or anyone wearing a heavy coat, should look for a longer adjustable strap.
